Configuration

About JSON Formatter

Format or minify standard JSON using configurable indentation. Optionally sort object keys recursively while preserving array order.

How to use JSON Formatter

  1. Paste standard JSON into the input field.
  2. Choose 2 spaces, 4 spaces, tabs, or a minified format.
  3. Choose whether object keys should be sorted recursively.
  4. Run the formatter to parse and re-serialize the text.
  5. Review the generated JSON structure.
  6. Copy the result to your clipboard.

Best Practices

  • Use strictly valid standard JSON as input (no single quotes or trailing commas).
  • Use readable indentation levels during active development and debugging.
  • Use minified output when formatting whitespace is unnecessary for the destination application.
  • Review sorted output if explicit property order matters to your specific workflow.
  • Remember that JSON object property ordering should generally not be treated as semantic data ordering.
  • Keep array ordering meaningful, as this formatter preserves exact array sequences.
  • Validate payloads against a JSON Schema separately when strict structural conformance matters.
  • Review large numeric values carefully, because JavaScript JSON parsing uses standard double-precision float semantics.

Benefits

  • Format compact JSON with line breaks and indentation for easier reading.
  • Minify JSON by removing formatting whitespace entirely.
  • Choose between space-based and tab-based indentation structures.
  • Optionally sort object keys recursively in alphabetical order.
  • Preserve array element ordering even when sorting object keys.
  • Process JSON parsing and formatting locally within your browser.
  • Copy the exact formatted or minified output directly to your clipboard.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Pasting JavaScript object syntax (like unquoted keys) instead of strict JSON.
  • Using single quotes instead of standard JSON double quotes.
  • Including inline or block comments in the JSON input.
  • Including trailing commas at the end of objects or arrays.
  • Expecting malformed JSON syntax to be repaired or guessed automatically.
  • Confusing formatting/beautification with JSON schema validation.
  • Assuming key sorting changes or reorganises array order.
  • Assuming minification changes the underlying logical data of the JSON object.
  • Expecting the formatter to download a physical file instead of copying text.
  • Assuming the tool supports JSON5 or other non-standard extensions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a JSON Formatter?

A JSON Formatter is a developer utility that parses a standard JSON string and re-serializes it with consistent whitespace and indentation, making it easier for humans to read and debug.

Does WebNift change the JSON data?

WebNift parses the string into a JavaScript object and then re-serializes it. While this preserves standard structures, be aware that numbers exceeding JavaScript's safe integer limit (Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER) may lose precision during the standard parsing phase.

What indentation options are available?

You can choose between 2 spaces, 4 spaces, tab indentation, or minified output (0 spaces/newlines).

What does Minified do?

Minified formatting removes all unnecessary whitespace, spaces, and line breaks from the serialized JSON string, resulting in the most compact textual representation possible.

What does Sort Keys do?

Sort Keys recursively traverses all objects in the parsed JSON and orders their properties alphabetically. This applies to nested objects at any depth.

Does sorting object keys change array order?

No. The key sorting feature only alphabetizes object properties. Standard arrays retain their exact original sequence.

Can the tool repair invalid JSON?

No. The formatter relies on strict, standard JSON parsing. If the input contains syntax errors, comments, or trailing commas, it will halt and report a parsing error.

Does it support JSON5 or comments?

No. This tool strictly supports standard JSON formats and does not parse JSON5 extensions or code comments.

Does the JSON Formatter validate a JSON schema?

No. While it implicitly checks for valid JSON syntax (in order to parse it), it does not evaluate your data against a structural JSON schema or API contract. WebNift offers a separate JSON Validator tool for syntax inspection.

Is my JSON uploaded to a server?

No. The JSON formatting, sorting, and serialization logic runs entirely on your local device in the browser.
