About Base64 Decoder

Decode standard Base64 strings to UTF-8 text, or decode Data URLs back to downloadable binary files. Uses strict UTF-8 validation. All processing runs locally in your browser with no server uploads.

How to use Base64 Decoder

  1. Paste a Base64-encoded string or a Data URL into the input field.
  2. Click the Run Tool button to decode.
  3. For plain Base64, the decoded UTF-8 text appears in the output panel.
  4. For Data URLs, a downloadable file is offered with the detected MIME type.
  5. Use the Copy button for text results or the Download button for file results.

Best Practices

  • Ensure your input is standard Base64 (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, +, /, =) and not Base64URL.
  • Use Data URL format (data:<mime>;base64,...) when decoding binary content like images or PDFs.
  • Check for double encoding if the decoded output itself looks like Base64.
  • Strip surrounding quotation marks or JSON wrapper syntax before pasting Base64 input.
  • Verify round-trip accuracy by encoding the decoded output with the WebNift Base64 Encoder.

Benefits

  • Decode standard Base64 strings to readable UTF-8 text.
  • Automatically detect and decode Data URLs into downloadable binary files.
  • Strip whitespace and line breaks from Base64 input before decoding.
  • Use strict UTF-8 validation to prevent silently corrupted output.
  • Process decoding locally in your browser with no data uploaded to any server.
  • Copy decoded text or download decoded files directly from the results panel.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming Base64 decoding is the same as decryption. Base64 is encoding, not encryption.
  • Pasting Base64URL input (containing - and _) instead of standard Base64 (containing + and /).
  • Expecting binary file output from plain Base64 input. Binary decoding requires a Data URL prefix.
  • Including surrounding JSON or HTML markup around the Base64 string instead of the raw value.
  • Confusing a decoding error with data corruption. Errors indicate invalid input, not tool failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Base64 decoding?

Base64 decoding reverses the Base64 encoding process, converting a string of Base64 characters back into the original bytes.

Is Base64 decoding the same as decryption?

No. Base64 is a reversible encoding scheme. Decryption requires a key or password. Anyone can decode Base64 without any secret.

Does this tool upload my data?

No. All decoding is performed locally in your browser using the atob() function and TextDecoder API. No data is sent to any server.

What happens if I paste invalid Base64?

The decoder reports an error. It does not attempt to repair or guess the intended input.

Can I decode Base64 that contains line breaks?

Yes. The decoder strips all whitespace including line breaks from the input before decoding.

What is the difference between plain Base64 and a Data URL?

Plain Base64 is just the encoded character string. A Data URL wraps Base64 with a MIME type header in the format data:<type>;base64,<data>. The decoder automatically detects which format you provide.

Does this tool support Base64URL?

No. This tool expects standard Base64 with +, /, and optional = padding. Base64URL characters (- and _) are not automatically converted.
